Most people never think about what kind of tow truck is coming until it is already backing up to their car. By then the decision has been made for you — and if it was made wrong, the repair bill can be many times the price of the tow. It is worth five minutes to know the difference.
There are really only two trucks you are likely to see for a normal car in Orange County: a wheel-lift and a flatbed. Both are legitimate tools. Neither is right for everything. The failure mode in this industry is not usually a bad driver — it is the wrong truck sent to a job because nobody asked what the car was.
What a Wheel-Lift Actually Is
A wheel-lift is the compact one. A metal yoke slides under one axle, cradles those two tires, and lifts that end of the car clear of the ground. The other two wheels stay down and roll along behind. No chains touch the body, no hooks go near the frame — it is a considerable improvement on the old sling trucks it replaced.
What it is good at:
- Tight spaces. Underground garages, low-clearance structures, narrow alleys, packed apartment lots. A wheel-lift gets in where a 30-foot flatbed simply cannot.
- Speed. Hook and go. On a straightforward job it is faster than winching a car up a deck.
- Cost. Smaller truck, less fuel, less time — it is the cheaper option, usually by $25 to $75 locally.
- Short front-wheel-drive moves. A FWD car with its front end lifted and the rear wheels rolling is genuinely fine for a few miles.
What it is bad at: anything where two wheels turning on the road is a problem. Which turns out to be a long list.
What a Flatbed Actually Is
A flatbed — a rollback, in the trade — has a deck that tilts and slides back to meet the ground. The car is winched up onto it and the whole vehicle rides with all four wheels off the road, secured at the wheels.
What it is good at: essentially everything, mechanically. Nothing rotates, nothing drags, no load goes through the suspension in a direction it was not designed for. It is the default correct answer whenever the car's condition or drivetrain is in question.
What it is bad at: geometry. It is a big truck. It will not fit under a parking-structure clearance bar, it needs room to tilt the deck, and it needs somewhere to turn around. It also costs more, because it is a bigger truck doing a slower job.
The Decision, Case by Case
All-wheel drive and four-wheel drive — flatbed
This is the one that costs people the most money. On an AWD or 4WD vehicle the axles are mechanically linked. Lift the front, roll the rear, and you are turning the driveshaft, the center differential and the transfer case while the engine is off and nothing is being lubricated the way it expects. Do it for twenty miles down the 5 and you can cook a transfer case.
Dollies under the rolling wheels are the accepted workaround, and a good operator carries them. But if the choice is available, an AWD car belongs on a deck. That covers a great many of the crossovers and Audis and Subarus on OC roads.
Lowered, modified or exotic — flatbed, with low-angle ramps
Ground clearance is the whole issue. A standard deck angle will meet a front splitter before the tires are even on the ramp. What is needed is a low approach angle, often with extra ramps to soften the break-over, plus soft straps over the tires rather than chains hooked to the chassis. Strapping at the wheels means the load goes through the suspension the way it does when the car is parked; chaining to the chassis with the suspension hanging is what bends things.

Electric vehicles — flatbed, always
An EV has no neutral that disconnects the motor from the wheels, so rolling the drive wheels spins the motor and pushes current back into a system that is powered down. Tesla's manual requires all four wheels off the ground, and every other EV manufacturer says effectively the same thing. There is no cheap alternative here; a dolly does not solve it. Accident damage — flatbed
After a collision you often have bent suspension, a wheel that will not point straight, a leaking line, or a body panel resting on a tire. None of that survives being dragged on two wheels, and a car that is already damaged should not accumulate more damage on the way to the shop — not least because an insurance adjuster is going to look at it. Locked wheels, no key, seized brakes — flatbed with skates
If a wheel will not turn, nothing rolls anywhere. Skates go under the locked wheels, the car goes onto the deck, done. A wheel-lift has no answer to a car that will not roll.
Front-wheel drive, short distance, awkward spot — wheel-lift
Credit where it is due. A FWD sedan on level three of a parking structure with a 6'8" bar, going two miles to a shop, is a wheel-lift job and there is nothing wrong with it. Insisting on a flatbed there means a longer wait and a higher bill for no benefit — and quite possibly a truck that cannot physically reach the car.
Rear-wheel drive — either, with a caveat
A RWD car towed from the rear, with the driven wheels lifted and the front wheels steering-locked and rolling, is mechanically fine. In practice we still often deck them, because RWD in this county disproportionately means something lowered or valuable.
The Clearance Bar Problem
Worth its own section because it decides so many OC jobs. Most parking structures here — South Coast Plaza, Fashion Island, the Spectrum decks, the office towers on Von Karman and MacArthur, most apartment garages in Irvine and Costa Mesa — run clearance bars at roughly 6'8". A flatbed is not getting under that.
So for a car stuck inside a structure you have two options: a wheel-lift does the whole job, or a wheel-lift pulls the car out to street level where a flatbed is waiting. The second is what we do for an AWD car or an EV in a garage, and it is worth knowing that it takes longer and involves two moves.
When you call, saying "it's on P3 at the Spectrum" tells a dispatcher more than any description of the car.
The Question to Ask
One sentence, before you agree to anything: "What truck are you sending, and why that one for my car?"
A dispatcher who knows the work will answer immediately and specifically — "flatbed, because a CX-5 is all-wheel drive." One who says "whatever's closest" is telling you the decision has not been made by anyone. That is also the moment to mention if your car is lowered, electric, all-wheel drive, or will not roll. Those four facts determine the truck.
It also matters for comparing prices. A wheel-lift quote and a flatbed quote are not the same product, and the cheaper number is not a better deal if it arrives as the wrong truck.
What We Run
We run flatbeds as the default across Orange County, with low-angle loading for lowered and exotic cars, soft straps rather than chains, skates for locked wheels, and dollies when a car has to come out of a structure a deck cannot enter. When a wheel-lift is genuinely the better tool for the job, we will tell you that too — there is no sense charging flatbed money for a two-mile FWD move out of a garage.
The Bottom Line
All-wheel drive, lowered, electric, crashed, or will not roll — flatbed. Front-wheel drive, short distance, somewhere a big truck cannot reach — wheel-lift is fine and cheaper. Everything else, ask which one they are sending and why.
